Description:
BACKGROUND Marine litter — in particular plastic waste — is one of the most urgent environmental challenges affecting coastal and riverine communities in sub-Saharan Africa. In Luanda, capital of Angola, rapid urban growth, infrastructure Insufficient and underdeveloped waste management system have resulted in significant plastic leaks into the environment. Much of this waste flows into drainage systems and eventually reaches the Atlantic Ocean, contributing to flooding, environmental degradation and threats to marine biodiversity and public health. In response to these challenges, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Angola, with funding from the Government of Norway, is implementing the “Marine Litter and Clean Ocean” project. This initiative is aligned with the Angolan National Waste Management Strategy (PESGRU), the UNDP Strategic Plan (2022-2025) and the Sustainable Development Goals (especially SDGs 11, 12, 13 and 14), aiming to test scalable, inclusive and sustainable solutions to reduce plastic pollution at source.
